Getting to Know Your Team From Jump

When you take over a new team, your number one priority is getting to know them.  You want to understand what makes them tick and what they need (from you) to succeed.

But walking into a room and rattling off questions feels less like alignment and more like an interview.

Relationships are a two-way street. It’s as important for your team to get to know you as it is for you to get to know your team. This is an integral step towards creating trust with them.

1. Lead with Vulnerability

Do you know what breeds trust? Vulnerability.

If you are vulnerable, you're showing your team that you trust them first. It creates a safe space that makes them want to begin trusting you in return.

Use your first team meeting to share a glimpse into who you are. Give them a look at:

  • Your life, both professional and personal.

  • Why you took on this role and your personal leadership principles.

  • Your communication preferences and working habits.

  • The expectations you have for yourself and the team, both short and long-term.

2. Provide Predictability

Do you know what also breeds trust? Predictability.

Before that meeting, send your agenda ahead of time to give them a heads-up on exactly what they can expect. When they see you have a clear plan, the guard comes down.

Need a template? That’s what we’re here for.

3. Creating the Space

Once you’ve set the tone, pass the mic.

Give the team the space to ask you anything, and leave plenty of unstructured time for social interaction and organic team bonding.

You’re not just introducing yourself, you're signaling that you're ready to listen, learn, and truly get to know your team from jump.
