Note to Self

Dear Newman Ajer,

Today, you're a new manager! Those butterflies you’re feeling? No, it’s not the breakfast burrito from the building cafe. It's equal parts nerves and excitement. I guess you could say, we’re nervcited

Yes, there’s going to be a lot coming at you in the first 100 days. Think about the knowledge you’ll accumulate, the relationships you’ll nurture, the opportunities you’ll unlock, and the impact you’ll make. Think about the growth!

No, you don’t have to have it all figured out on day 1. But this letter is to remind you that how you spend your first 100 days in this new role will have a measured impact when you get to where I am (writing you this letter). So you should be ready to L.A.U.N.C.H. from the jump. With a well thought out and developed plan, you’ll be able to hone your long-term vision and become the successful leader you envision.

So, take it from me. Well, take it from the future you. Here are some tips as you start your new role:

  • Be a self-aware leader, not 'the elephant in the room.'

  • Build a high-performing team, don't settle for the status quo.

  • Bring snacks to meetings. You’ll be everyone’s favorite leader.

  • Contribute to the solution, not the problem.

  • Keep a spare shirt. Coffee happens.

  • Foster the right relationships, don't step on toes.

  • Set the right goals, don't fly by the seat of your pants.

  • Enroll in the FromJump platform and tell Susan from HR that licensing it for all new managers is not only an employee benefit but a talent acquisition insurance policy.

Jump to it,
Your Future-Self
